The Tigers of Tennessee State (3-7, 2-3) dropped their third consecutive contest, falling 20-3 to UT Martin in the final home game of the season. For the third consecutive ballgame, Tennessee State was stricken with advanced-stage offensive ineptitude, as the Tigers were only able to generate 235 yards of total offense, and only 74 rushing yards, marking the second time in the last three games Tennessee State has been held under the century mark on the ground. It’s no coincidence that these struggles have aligned with their current three-game skid. I don’t know what to tell me what should be coming in today.
UT Martin got right to work, taking the opening kickoff and marching 77-yards in 7 plays that ended with a Dresser Winn 14-yard scoring pass to Colton Dowell, putting the Tigers in a 7-0 hole only 2:51 into the contest.
As pointed out in our preview of this game, one of the keys for Tennessee State to win would be to create turnovers, and the best avenue would be through the passing game, with Winn’s latest propensity to complete passes to the other team. Tennessee State took advantage of when Jashun Bryant intercepted Winn at the UT Martin 17-yard line. The Tiger offense could only advance the ball 2 yards in three plays and came away empty handed with Kaleb Mosley missing a 32-yard field goal attempt.
The defense forced another turnover later in the period when Mr. Bryant made Zak Wallace cough up the football deep in Tennessee State territory. However the Tennessee State offense could not play take advantage of the turnover, but was in the holiday spirit as they gave the ball back via a Draylen Ellis interception ,one of two he tossed on the evening, but threw in a Christmas bonus as Ty Woods took the interception 39-yards to the house to give the Skyhawks a 14-0 advantage.
Tennessee State’s lone score of the day would come in the second quarter via a 20-yard field from Mosley that cut the lead to 14-3. They would never threaten to score the rest of the contest.
A one-yard touchdown run from Winn early in the fourth quarter brought the game to its final count of 20-3.
For Tennessee State, now losers of three consecutive games, Edfie George will need to find answers before they hit the road to face Texas A&M Commerce next Saturday.
